AN INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM FOR CHIEF JUSTICES AND OTHER COURT LEADERS
28-30 October 2009
New York, NY
PARTICIPANTS
The Institute is sponsoring a symposium on legal writing and reasoning for chief justices, members of international tribunals, and other court leaders.
The language of the symposium will be English, but representatives of secular and Shari’a courts, common law and civil law, local, national, and international tribunals are welcome to attend.
PROGRAM
The program will be a “symposium” in the classical sense—a feast of ideas during which guests of comparable standing will be the experts, discussing important issues of common interest in a congenial environment.
The proceedings will begin 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday October 28, when Professor James C. Raymond, president of the Institute, will deliver a lecture on logic and its limits in the rule of law at New York Law School’s Center for International Law. Professor Raymond has more than twenty-five years of experience conducting seminars on legal writing and reasoning for judges and lawyers in more than twenty-five countries (see www.jcraymond.com).
The material for discussion during the subsequent two days will be derived from judgments the participants themselves will have nominated in advance. Cases involving gender, religion, sexual preference, human rights, entitlements of indigenous peoples, and political or cultural conflicts are encouraged, particularly those that have resulted in dissenting opinions, reversal on appeal, or public debate.
TUITION AND FEES
There will be no tuition or fees for the program other than a $450 registration fee to cover conference materials, coffee breaks, and dinners. Participants will be expected to fund their own travel, lodging, and related expenses. The Institute can provide a list of hotels in Manhattan and letters of support to assist participants seeking funding from their local agencies or foundations.
